News - Tri-Adventure Autumn Series

tri_adventureTri-Adventure will be launching a new event for the Autumn. The Tri-Adventure Trail combines trail running and navigation over 1 hour. This event is ideal for runners with a spirit of adventure or competitors who don’t own a bike!

The Tri-Adventure Sprint and Tri-Adventure Trail are ideal for beginners who want to try adventure racing for the first time through to elite racers who want to push themselves as hard as they can in the given time limit.

Both events take place on the mountain biking mecca of the North Downs in Surrey, a short drive from central London. The extensive network of trails and bridleways make this an ideal destination for Tri-Adventure.

The next race series is being held in Peaslake, Surrey on the 19th September, 17th October and the 28th November 2010. We look forward to seeing you there.

News - Might Contain Nuts announce support of good causes

We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting two fantastic causes, the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and the Brecon Beacons National Park Erosion Fund.

In the many years we have been training, competing and organising events in the local area we have been fortunate enough to never have to call on the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, but have on occasions witness the life saving services they provide. Whilst we may not have had to call on them in the past, knowing they are there offers great assurance.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team is an emergency service staffed entirely by volunteers and funded by donation. They operate principally in mid Wales, working from the Brecon Beacons National Park north to Plynlimon, from the Welsh borderland westward, through mid Wales, to the Ceredigion coast. Their work is not restricted to mountain and wilderness search and rescue for climbers and hill walkers: skills are also deployed by the police to search for vulnerable or missing persons in the community where we can employ our specialist medical and rescue techniques.

Race report - WAN DAY ADVENTURE RACE 2010

21ST AUGUST 2010, PENTLAND HILLS, EDINBURGH

After tackling the LAMM earlier in the summer, me & Jim fancied doing something a bit different – and possibly a bit more ‘adventure racy’ – towards the start of the Autumn. Alas, this year in Scotland, Autumn started on 5th July.

The Wan Day is run in association with Rat Race, the guys who do the ‘Urban Rat Race’ series and so on, and is a run/bike/splash in the Pentland Hills just south of Edinburgh. Jim did it last year with Organised John, so-called because he is the only one of us who is actually organised, and Amazon Veronika, so-called because she’s tall and lovely but also a little bit scary. Unfortunately, last year they only got to do the bike and kayak as, on the way to the run transition, they noticed that Veronika’s car had been broken into and they had to deal with that instead.

So, we thought we’d have another crack at it with me joining to make a team of 4 called ‘United Nations’ – me (English), Jim (Scot), Amazon Veronika (Czech) and Organised John (German). Clever, eh?

News - Competition Winner and other stuff!

racing-start-day-2We are aware that we have been a little remote recently with a mixture of either competing, developing our own race portfolio and another exciting project taking up a lot of our time, so apologies if you missed us :)

So to catch up what can I share with you. Well for starters the belated winner of our best contribution to the community for June goes to Mike P for his highly entertaining race report from the LAMM. This is the second month Mike has won and shows the value of spending that little bit of extra time and creative thinking on those race reports and gear reviews, well done Mike and keep em coming! I feel like I am writing an end of term report, have a gold star and an extra bottle of warm milk (showing my age).

I mentioned our own races, we  have had some fantastic feedback on ‘Something For The Weekend’, thanks to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts with us. It will deafinitely be back next year, probably with some minor tweaks but it is our intention not to lose that personal, friendly touch which I know was very well received by everyone.

Race Report - Something For The Weekend

CanoeWe arrived at Newcourt Farm campsite, at the foot of the black mountains at 7am Sunday morning feeling unbelievably under prepared. But then again other than fulfilling the kit list and feeling relatively fit there isn’t that much prep for the day you can do, as you’ve no idea what the route will be. The idea is to collect as many points as possible whilst navigating your way around the Black Mountains and The Wye Valley with in a set time. You are given 3 maps all containing checkpoints with different values depending on the difficulty of getting to them. Within the short time of recieving the info and starting the race, the idea is to plan the best route based on the terrain and your individual ability.

Stage one started at 8.10am and involved getting to Glasbury to set off in the kayak within a window of 10.10am and 10.40am (if you missed it you were out) Easy if you just ran the 2 miles to the river…however there were lots of points to be collected on the way. The route we chose took us right the otherside of the Wye Valley and we made it back to the canoes just as the launch time started.

Event - Al Andalus Ultra Trail 2010

lojaalhama2sTeam ‘Might Contain Nuts’ consisting of Barry French, Colm McCoy, Gamel Kamli & Joe Green will be taking up the considerable challenge of the Al Andalus Ultra Trail 2010, the team will be flying out of the UK on the 10th July in preparation to start the race on the 12th July.

The 2009 edition, proved to be a very tough race and many seasoned competitors said it was the toughest they had ever done. The course was demanding, temperatures were high (35-45C), climbs numerous and long and the trails scenic. Over 90% was off-road, mountain and desert tracks with the majority of tarmac in the final kilometres when approaching the stage village finishes.

The 2010 Edition will prove to be just as demanding and challenging, with some new twists and turns that will keep it fresh for those returning and a great challenge for the new participant. The race is semi-supported and there is a unique atmosphere that everyone can share in.

Stage One is shorter this year at 37 km, providing the athletes (particularly those not used to the heat) to settle in to the event, however with some very hard ascents up to 1420m, desert landscape, the heat and lack of shade, it will be a long way from being a stroll in the park.

Stage Two begins by descending into Alhama’s spectacular gorge. From here you travel through the full length of the gorge and then continue along sections of the GR7 before heading into the Sierra Almijara. This tough mountain stage includes a new, very beautiful, single track section. From here you begin to descend via the forest tracks before some tough final climbs into Jatar. Total distance will be 42 km.

Event - Something For The Weekend Results

race23Please find below a link to the results for ‘Something For The Weekend’.

http://www.mightcontainnuts.com/events/something_for_the_weekend/results.html

We sincerely hope you enjoyed racing as much as we enjoyed putting it on, congratulations to everyone who took part.

We are gathering together the various pictures taken during the event and will let you know when they have been added to the event website.

Putting on the event took a huge amount of effort and we would like to recognise the members of the extended MCNuts family who gave up their weekends and worked incredibly hard to make the event a success, it would not have been possible without them and we are extremely grateful.

We have already started to talk about next year and how the event could be improved, to this end we would welcome any feedback you may have good or bad, please send any feedback to matt@mightcontainnuts.com .

Race Report - LAMMs To The Slaughter

racing-start-day-2

Well, it started like this…  Jim said he’d always fancied doing a Mountain Marathon (MM) and, as we lived in Scotland, we should do one up here.  I assumed he meant the ‘Namby-Pamby MM’ or the ‘All-DownHill-And-Plenty-Of-Rest MM’.

Nope.

Jim wanted to do the connoisseur’s MM, despite the fact he can’t spell ‘connoisseur’.   So, the LAMM it was (www.lamm.co.uk).  We entered last year and had planned loads of training activities to ensure our fitness and nav was spot on.  As anyone with any military experience will tell you, plans never survive first contact with the enemy.  Ours never even managed to get as far as the front-line before it shot itself in the foot and retired injured for tea and medals.  We did manage a couple of runs in the Campsies and Pentlands with backpacks but, in hindsight, these events didn’t really mimic the LAMM much at all.

Perhaps ignorance is bliss and, therefore, two exceptionally happy campers pitched up at Loch Ffyne on 12th June.  The weather was pretty OK, there was plenty of space for camping, and we had a big purple tent.

We spent Friday night gawping at other seasoned MMer’s tiny packs and then ditching a load of kit from our over-stuffed 30 litre bags.  I don’t mind saying that, by now, I was feeling pretty intimidated and a bit out of my depth.

I should point out that neither of us had done an MM before and we had booked onto the D-course, which promised about 40km of running (!) with nearly 2000m of ascent over two days.  We had thought about the novice course but, as seasoned mountaineers, we felt we merited a harder option.  We had quickly decided that we weren’t ‘in it to win it’ and would be happy just to survive without serious injury or long-lasting PTSD.

For those who haven’t done a LAMM before, you start on Day 1, do some orienteering, camp somewhere random over night, and finish with some more orienteering on Day 2.  In theory.
